Not so long ago, about 4 years back, a couple of college friends decided that they have seen enough of the harsh world. The world where millions do not have proper food yet the country's GDP is gloated about. The world where there is no proper elementary education to millions yet year after year some of country's best minds sell their minds abroad. Instead of just cribbing about it and moving on to their own business, they decided to ACT and do something. A small step. A little something. A way of giving back to the society that apparently has given them more than the most. And what they started then has steadily grown and today finds itself supporting around 150 children across two homes in whatever way possible: Avvai Home and Orphanage for girls, Chennai and Sri Yogi Narayana Yathindrara Ashraya Nivasa, Bangalore
Avvai Home, Chennai
It was started way back in 1936 by Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy and has been patronized by various others since then. Today the administration is done by Ms. Sushila and Ms. Rajalakshmi. Today the home serves as a haven for 100+ girls.

How it all started?
Early in the recession hit 2009, most of the engineering grads that got hired in campuses had nothing to do but wait for their companies to call them for jobs. Inspired by their college professor a couple of girls decided to take evening tuition at the Avvai Home Orphanage in Besant Nagar, Chennai. The home houses more than 120 girls, in the age group of 5 to 18. Most of the children are from under-privileged families, who cannot afford their education and shelter. The home takes care of their education, stay, food and other needs till they finish their schooling.
What started as a leisure time activity grew as a passion and in the three months they interacted with the children, they both got close to them and got to know their needs and issues. The home had a problem. The home with 120 strong members who were all girls/lady wardens did not have a guard or watchman and as a result they were disturbed in the nights by drunkards and thieves. The girls decided they will appoint a watchman and sponsor the monthly expense incurred on the watchman. They gathered help from their friends and contacts and till today they have been able to sponsor for this cause. The girls in the home are sleeping peacefully thanks to this small initiative.

Where it stands now?
It has been almost 4 years now and I have been part of it for three years now. We have constantly grown and now stand as a small group of 25. What we do is nothing extra ordinary. Just simple things. And we found out that simple things do make a big difference when done for a long enough time.
