Life is all about taking risk, they say. Fortune favours the brave, the history has it. 'Be the change that you want to see' said Mahatma Gandhi. And the barely one year old party - Aam Admi Party - that is creating waves in Indian Politics is all set to make a lot of such cliches real and define new ones with its historic ascent to power in the Delhi Assembly elections. No single party got absolute majority and the result was a hung parliament. With BJP refusing to form government, the ball was on the court of AAP. It had to make a move. The Congress setup the bait by offering outside support. It had to take the bait. This is an opportunity. A rare one at that, to prove themselves first to themselves that it can be done and to the people. How else can one expect to clean the system? You can have the broom in hand, but you have to get in the dirt to clean it! No point shouting with the broom from outside. Nothing will change, as they have seen for an year or so. With this move AAP has risked it all! Its biggest weapon was its reputation of fight against corruption. By forming the government with the support of the Congress, AAP has risked it all and has virtually put everything it has gained so far to the tables for the biggest gamble - all or nothing! The critics argue that AAP will now be at the mercy of the Congress and any positive move (which might be a potential threat to Congress) will be met with a threat to bring the government down by withdrawing support. It is true to some extent. It can also backfire on Congress, given the Lok Sabha elections are not too far. They will fear losing out in Lok Sabha in case they withdraw support and come under heavy criticism. Unfortunately the Congress may be forced to be true to its long said motto ' Congress ke hath aam aadmi ke saath'. What an irony! To counter the argument that AAP will become Congress-controlled they have been circulating this video across in various social media.
What this result has shown is people are starting to become smart. The multi-cultural cosmopolitan urban Delhi cannot be seen as a true representative of the nation as a whole. Certainly not the true India, the rural India. Smart use of social media can't win you seats in the interior villages of India. So it is highly unlikely that AAP will push this intensity to make such an impact in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. But how they go about doing their job in Delhi will be the measure by which they will be judged. May be one day they will be ready if they do a good job now. Are they really what they seem or claim to be or not? The question will have to wait. Atleast somebody has shown the guts to take up the responsibility. To bring about a positive impact to the system. Whether they do it or not remains to be seen though. And one has to bear in mind that fighting corruption alone - which has been AAP's major and popular agenda - is not enough. There are a lot of other things like dealing with divided societies and groups, big decisions on policies, diplomatic moves that comes with the governance. They should be able to focus on these aspects as well.
Given the volatility in Indian politics it could also be that AAP would not get a meaningful period to show their competence. Nevertheless the point here is, it is unfair to stereotype AAP as just another political party just because they formed government with Congress. That being said, it is also unfair to over hype and glorify them. Lets just give it a chance before jumping to conclusions. Is AAP a boon or bane? Wait and watch what the broom of the common man does!
